Repairing or Reshaping Your Nose With Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery
The nose is one of our most important facial features. That is because it resides in the middle of our faces, making it one of the first things people notice about us. However, men and women who have a misshapen or aesthetically unpleasing nose (whether it be crooked, too large or too small for your face) can often feel self-conscious and embarrassed. Luckily, rhinoplasty can help reshape, straighten, reduce or augment a person’s nose.
At Corpus Christi Institute of Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, Dr. Vijay Bindingnavele, known fondly as Dr. Vijay, offers a wide range of cosmetic procedures, including rhinoplasty in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Dr. Vijay Bindingnavele offers rhinoplasty to men and women who live in or near Corpus Christi. Call our office at (361) 888-7417 today to schedule a consultation.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty (corrective nose surgery) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that helps to correct frustrating imperfections with the nose. Ultimately, the goal of rhinoplasty is to create a nose that compliments and balances the natural beauty of your face. Rhinoplasty can help correct noses that:
- Have a nasal hump
- Have a drooping nasal tip
- Are crooked
- Are not in balance with the rest of the face
- Negatively affect your breathing (such as a deviated septum)
While rhinoplasty offers stunning results as a standalone surgery, many patients choose to combine their rhinoplasty with other procedures to achieve even more dramatic correction to the appearance of their face. Some of these combined procedures and treatments include:
Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can help men and women who suffer from nasal imperfections. Whether you were born with your nasal issues or it developed from an injury (a broken nose), rhinoplasty can help you achieve a nasal appearance that you can feel proud of. Ideal candidates are non-smoking individuals, in good general health who have realistic expectations for their results.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is generally performed as an outpatient procedure and can be performed under either local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours to complete, unless more extensive correction is needed.
Depending on the correction required, Dr. Vijay will readjust the bone and cartilage of the nose. This includes expanding narrow nostril width, changing the angle between the nose and mouth, reducing the size of the nose by removing cartilage and/or bone or augmenting (increasing the size) the nose with the use of cartilage grafts.
During your rhinoplasty consultation, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic frustrations and desires, and Dr. Vijay will have the opportunity to examine your nose to decide which of the two surgical techniques are best for you.
Open Rhinoplasty
For this rhinoplasty technique, a small incision is made on the columella, the small space between the nostrils. This approach allows Dr. Vijay better visibility during the procedure; however, it does result in a small scar that will fade over time.
Closed Rhinoplasty
For this approach, the incision is made inside the nostrils. While there will be no visible scarring with this technique, a closed rhinoplasty does affect the visibility that Dr. Vijay has during the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?
After your rhinoplasty, you will experience some bruising, soreness and swelling. The bruising will dissipate after a few days, and prescription or over-the-counter medication can be taken to alleviate any pain or discomfort you feel. You can expect to have significant swelling in the surgical area for several weeks or months, depending on the extent of your procedure and your body’s reaction to the surgery.
Sutures will be removed after a few days, and you will have an external nasal splint that you will need to wear for several weeks. Some patients require an internal nasal splint that must be worn for several days after the procedure. Nasal saline sprays can be used to minimize any discomfort you experience from dryness in the nose.
Most patients can return to work and their normal, daily activities after 1 to 2 weeks. However, it is important that you allow your body to heal itself during your rhinoplasty recovery period. This means that you should refrain from strenuous activities during this time.
What Results Can I Expect From My Rhinoplasty?
Most patients are able to see their final rhinoplasty results after 6 months; however, it can take up to a year for the swelling to completely subside and your final results to settle.
Once the swelling is gone, you can look forward to a nose that is smoother, straighter and more proportionally balanced to your face. Rhinoplasty not only offers improvement to the appearance of your nose, but it can help you feel more comfortable and confident with yourself and the way you look and feel.
